Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Mechanics

Full Job Description:

Our customer is seeking an experienced Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Mechanic to provide essential support for our tunnel project in Manchester, NH. This position reports to the Foreman and plays a key role in maintaining site safety and efficiency. This is an hourly, nonexempt position.

Qualifications

  • Safety Orientation: A strong commitment to safety protocols and the ability to comply with all federal and state safety regulations (OSHA 10 certification is required).

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Familiarity with operating and maintaining a range of tools and equipment.

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience as a TBM Mechanic with applicable certifications.

  • Problem solving: Analytical thinking that gets to the root cause of the problem and comes up with a permanent solution.

  • Soft Skills: Strong communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a team, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities are essential.

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with tunnel-specific equipment (TBM, locomotives, slurry systems).

  • Familiarity with underground construction practices.

  • Ability to read engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics.

Work Environment & Requirements

  • Work in above- and underground environments, including confined spaces and all weather conditions.

  • Exposure to noise, dirt, moisture, and temperature extremes.

  • Physically demanding role requiring strength, stamina, and sustained activity (climbing, balancing, material handling).

  • Ability to lift at least 40 lbs. unassisted.

  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, twist, and maneuver in tight spaces.

  • Requires manual dexterity for handling tools and small components.

  • Willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency on-call as needed.

  • Optional participation in hyperbaric (pressurized) work environments up to 36 psi.

  • Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations and work effectively in a team with engineers, geologists, operators, and safety staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs on the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and related equipment (pumps, drive systems, gearboxes, valves, etc.).

  • Performing field repairs and executing preventative maintenance to keep the machine operating at full capacity.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.

  • Effectively communicate with management, supervisors, and engineering staff.
