General Laborer / Carpenter Helper
About this role
Join a commercial construction crew in Austin as a general laborer / carpenter helper. You’ll work on active job sites under the Superintendent and Foreman performing site prep, material handling, basic concrete work, traffic control, and assisting carpenters and other skilled trades. This is physical, full-time site work. Expect early starts, outdoor conditions, and hands-on training. You’ll follow site safety rules, attend required safety training, and must obtain OSHA 10 within 90 days of hire. Strong attendance, a safety-first attitude, and the ability to follow directions are a must.
What you'll do
- • Clean and prepare commercial sites: remove trash, eliminate hazards, and keep walkways clear.
- • Handle and move materials (lumber, rebar, concrete forms), load/unload deliveries, and distribute materials to crews.
- • Perform minor excavation, concrete placement and chipping, backfill, and general site grading.
- • Operate material hoists/elevators and assist with installation and maintenance of barricades, ramps, and minor scaffolding.
- • Control pedestrian and vehicle traffic around work zones and signal equipment operators for safe movement of machinery and materials.
- • Assist carpenters, concrete finishers, and other trades as directed; report hazards and unsafe practices to supervision.
What we're looking for
- • Ability to perform physical labor for long periods: lift up to 50 lbs regularly, climb, bend, and work on uneven surfaces.
- • Basic knowledge of construction tools and safe tool use (hammers, saws, come-a-longs, sweepers).
- • Ability to follow written and verbal directions, maintain concentration, and work under supervision.
- • Willingness to attend site safety training and obtain OSHA 10 within 90 days of employment.
- • Able to pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screen; silica exam if required for the project.
- • Reliable transportation to job sites in Austin and flexibility for early starts and occasional overtime.
Qualifications
- • OSHA 10 (must be obtained within 90 days of hire)
- • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required
- • Ability to pass criminal background check, drug screen, and pre-employment physical
- • Spanish/English bilingual skills preferred
- • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred
