General Labor - Paving Mechanic Support
About This Role
Join a field service team as a General Laborer supporting paving mechanics and equipment technicians in the Fairfax, VA area. This hourly, per diem role helps troubleshoot and assist with heavy equipment repairs, coordinates parts and dispatch, and ensures quality repairs to minimize rework. You’ll work by phone/email and directly on job sites, report deficiencies to improve the PM program, and participate in manufacturer/ dealer training when available. This role requires reliable travel, overtime as needed, keeping your service truck clean and stocked, and having your own industry-standard tools.
What You'll Do
- • Provide technical support to equipment technicians by phone, email, and on-site to help diagnose and repair paving equipment.
- • Coordinate closely with Field Services Dispatcher, parts personnel, field managers, superintendents, and mechanics to ensure on-time parts delivery and job completion.
- • Inspect repairs for quality, document findings, and report deficiencies to improve preventive maintenance (PM) effectiveness.
- • Participate in technical training with dealers/manufacturers and pass training on to field mechanics.
- • Review shop tool needs and recommend tools or procedural changes to improve efficiency; keep service truck clean and organized.
- • Follow all safety, HR, HOS, and Trimble/Telogis regulations while performing assigned duties; perform other job-related tasks as required.
What We're Looking For
- • Hands-on experience with heavy equipment maintenance (diesel/gas engines, hydraulics, powertrain/transmission).
- • Proven ability with welding and general electrical troubleshooting on heavy equipment and accessories.
- • Familiarity with heavy equipment AC, fuel/emissions systems, and transmission/automatic systems.
- • Comfort working in the field: travel, per diem assignments, overtime, and hands-on support at job sites.
- • Own a set of industry-standard tools (company does not supply standard tools) and maintain a clean service vehicle.
- • Strong communication skills for coordinating with dispatch, parts, and field personnel; able to document and report work clearly.
Qualifications
- • Valid driver's license; CDL Class A preferred where required for routes.
- • DOT medical card and knowledge of Hours of Service rules, if applicable.
- • Heavy equipment or diesel mechanic certifications (ASE, OEM, or equivalent) preferred.
- • Welding certification (AWS or equivalent) a plus.
- • Ability to pass drug screen and background check.
- • English required; Spanish or other language skills helpful for crew communications.
