Grade Technician
About This Role
Join our earthwork crew in Richmond, VA as a Grade Technician. You’ll work side-by-side with heavy equipment operators to fine-tune grades using shovels, portable compaction gear, and basic measuring tools. This is hands-on work — precision matters and so does a strong work ethic. You’ll check elevations, verify measurements, and ensure proper drainage while keeping the site clean and safe. The role requires clear communication with the crew, following directions, and the physical ability to handle material placement, water pumps, and routine site cleanup.
What You'll Do
- • Fine-tune grades by hand using shovels, rakes, and portable compaction equipment to meet project specs
- • Check elevations and verify measurements using grade rods, string lines, and basic levels; report discrepancies
- • Ensure proper drainage and slope on trenches, pads, and swales; assist with placing and compacting material
- • Operate and maintain water pumps and other small site equipment; help load/unload materials and tools
- • Keep work areas clean and safe, perform site cleanup and basic demolition as directed
- • Communicate with heavy equipment operators and foremen to maintain efficient workflow and enforce safety
What We're Looking For
- • Previous experience in grading, earthwork, excavation, or general construction preferred
- • Physically fit — able to lift, carry, and move up to 50+ lbs and work in variable weather
- • Hands-on skill with shovels, measuring tools, compaction equipment, and basic site layout
- • Strong verbal communication and basic written tracking for inventory and work notes
- • Able to follow directions, enforce safety practices, and work as part of a crew on site
Qualifications
- • OSHA 10-hour Construction safety (preferred)
- • Trenching & Excavation training or experience
- • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to local job sites
- • First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain certification
- • Must pass background check and drug screen
- • English required; Spanish or bilingual skills a plus
