Heavy Equipment Mechanic
About This Role
Looking for a hands-on Heavy Equipment Mechanic in Newport News, VA. You’ll be out in the field diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining construction machinery — gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical systems. This role requires someone who can work independently, make fast repair decisions, and manage parts and schedules. This is a field position with flexible hours (early mornings and evenings). Pay ranges from $20–$50/hr depending on experience and skill level. Candidates must have at least 3 years of field experience and a valid driver’s license.
What You'll Do
- • Troubleshoot and repair diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems on construction equipment
- • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and routine service in the field
- • Make quick repair decisions, recommend equipment downtime, and arrange repair schedules
- • Order parts, track inventory, and coordinate parts delivery for timely repairs
- • Perform basic OXY/Acetylene torch work and MIG welding as needed
- • Keep accurate maintenance records and protect confidential equipment information
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 3 years of field experience repairing construction or heavy equipment
- • Strong knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, fuel/emissions, hydraulics, and powertrain systems
- • Basic OXY/Acetylene torch and MIG welding skills
- • Ability to work independently and safely; make repair decisions under time pressure
- • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; available for early mornings and evenings
- • Able to read and follow written and oral instructions and maintain confidentiality
Qualifications
- • High school diploma, GED, or trade school preferred
- • Valid driver's license
- • Minimum 3 years field experience (required)
- • Basic OXY/Acetylene torch and MIG welding competency
- • Comfortable working in outdoor/construction environments and following safety protocols
