About This Role

Join a field service team in Richmond, VA as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. You’ll keep construction equipment running—diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions and electrical systems to minimize downtime on job sites. This is hands-on work out in the field; you’ll travel between sites, maintain a service truck, and coordinate directly with foremen, dispatch, and parts personnel. This is a per diem, hourly role that requires flexibility for early mornings, nights, weekends and overtime as needed. You will participate in manufacturer training, pass that knowledge to other mechanics, and help improve preventative maintenance programs to keep equipment productive and safe.

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical controls on heavy construction equipment
  • Provide on-site technical support and troubleshooting for field crews and communicate repair status with dispatch and supervisors
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and document repairs to reduce repeat failures
  • Order parts, manage service truck inventory, and coordinate timely parts delivery with parts personnel
  • Participate in vendor/manufacturer training and share best practices with the mechanic team
  • Comply with safety, HOS, and telematics regulations while keeping service truck clean and organized

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED; trade school or technical training preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of field experience repairing heavy construction equipment (diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions)
  • Proven diagnostic skills with hydraulic, electrical, and engine systems on modern equipment
  • Familiarity with diagnostic software such as Cat ET, Volvo ProSis, Cummins InSite preferred
  • Basic oxy/acetylene torch and stick welding skills preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between job sites; must pass drug screen and background check

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (trade school certificate a plus)
  • 1+ year heavy equipment field repair experience required
  • Experience with diesel engine, powertrain, and hydraulic diagnostics and repairs
  • Familiarity with Cat ET, Volvo Prosis, Tech Tool, Cummins InSite (preferred)
  • Oxy/acetylene torch and basic stick welding skills (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license; able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
  • Able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and extended shifts as required
  • Knowledge of HOS, telematics systems, and adherence to company safety policies
