Heavy Equipment Mechanic
About This Role
Heavy Equipment Mechanic needed in Baltimore, MD to keep construction machines running and projects on schedule. You’ll diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions and electrical systems across job sites and service trucks. This is field-focused work — you’ll be troubleshooting on-site, arranging parts, and coordinating repair downtime with field crews. Expect hands-on days, overtime as needed, and per diem for travel. You’ll work with dispatch, parts personnel, and field superintendents, follow safety and hours-of-service rules, and participate in manufacturer technical training to improve uptime and reduce repeat repairs.
What You'll Do
- • Provide technical support and repairs for diesel engines, powertrains, transmissions, hydrostatic drives and hydraulic systems on heavy construction equipment.
- • Diagnose electrical, hydraulic and engine issues using OEM diagnostic tools and hands-on troubleshooting; perform preventative maintenance inspections.
- • Communicate daily with field personnel, dispatch, parts, and site supervisors to schedule repairs and ensure timely parts delivery.
- • Arrange and recommend machinery repair downtime, place parts orders, and document work to minimize recalls and duplicate repairs.
- • Keep service truck clean, organized, and stocked; transport tools and parts to job sites and maintain HOS/telematics compliance when applicable.
- • Participate in manufacturer/dealer technical training and share knowledge with other mechanics to improve team capabilities.
What We're Looking For
- • High school diploma or GED required; vocational/trade school preferred.
- • Minimum 1 year field experience repairing heavy construction equipment (diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions).
- • Proven diagnostic skills on hydraulic, electrical and engine systems; experience with OEM software (Cat ET, Volvo Prosis, Cummins InSite) preferred.
- • Basic welding and torch experience (OXY/acetylene, stick welding) preferred; ability to use common shop tools and meters.
- • Valid driver’s license required; ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and overtime as needed.
- • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check; able to meet physical demands of lifting and working around heavy equipment.
Qualifications
- • High school diploma or GED (trade school preferred)
- • Valid U.S. driver’s license; clean driving record preferred
- • 1+ year documented heavy equipment field service experience
- • Familiarity with Cat ET, Volvo Prosis, Cummins InSite or similar diagnostic tools (preferred)
- • Basic OXY/acetylene and stick welding skills or certification (preferred)
- • Ability to pass drug screen and background check; comfortable working in outdoor jobsite conditions
