Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Indianapolis, IN $29-$39/hr

About this role

We’re hiring experienced heavy equipment/diesel mechanics in Indianapolis to service and repair commercial construction and industrial machinery. Work includes diesel engine repairs, hydraulic troubleshooting, electrical and accessory maintenance, and preventive maintenance inspections. This role is hands-on, field-focused, and requires strong diagnostic skills. You’ll work from a service truck and on-site at active job locations. Expect travel to regional job sites when needed, performing both scheduled preventive maintenance and unscheduled corrective repairs. Ideal candidates are self-reliant, safety-minded, and comfortable working outdoors and at heights.

What you'll do

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines, transmissions, and drivetrains on commercial heavy equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service (fluids, filters, belts, brakes, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, hoses, and fittings
  • Service and repair AC systems, electrical accessories, charging systems, and wiring faults
  • Complete on-site repairs from a mobile service truck and support emergency field breakdowns
  • Document work performed, maintain accurate maintenance records, and order/replenish parts and supplies

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience maintaining and repairing commercial heavy equipment and diesel-powered machinery
  • Strong diagnostic skills for diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical/AC accessory systems
  • Ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on construction and industrial equipment
  • Willingness to travel to regional job sites and perform overnight or multi-day assignments as needed
  • Comfortable working from service trucks and in-field conditions; able to work in variable weather
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background and drug screening

Qualifications

  • Trade school diploma, technical certificate, or equivalent hands-on experience in diesel/heavy equipment repair
  • Diesel technician or similar certification preferred
  • EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification preferred for AC work
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) helpful but not required
  • Ability to read schematics and use electronic diagnostic tools
  • English required; Spanish or other language skills a plus
