Field Heavy Equipment Mechanic
About This Role
Join a field maintenance team in Richmond, VA as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic focused on keeping heavy construction equipment safe and running on schedule. You’ll perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance in the field, support other technicians by phone or on-site, and work closely with dispatch, parts and vendor teams to minimize downtime. This role requires a hands-on, no-nonsense mechanic who follows safety and HOS rules, keeps a clean, stocked service truck, and uses telematics (Trimble/Telogis) and shop records to make solid repair/replace decisions. Expect varied hours, possible overtime, and travel between job sites — Class A or B CDL and at least one year of field experience required.
What You'll Do
- • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair heavy construction equipment on job sites (diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical, fuel/emissions systems).
- • Provide technical support to field technicians by phone, email and in-person; verify repairs and minimize repeat work.
- • Coordinate with dispatch, parts and vendors to secure timely parts delivery and schedule repairs to limit downtime.
- • Perform preventive maintenance inspections, enter service records in the database, and recommend additions to the PM program.
- • Maintain service truck, tools and inventory; keep truck clean and organized and ensure compliance with HOS and Trimble/Telogis rules.
- • Attend dealer/manufacturer technical training and share knowledge with other mechanics; follow all safety and company policies on site.
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 1 year field experience repairing heavy construction equipment.
- • Valid driver’s license plus Class A or B CDL required.
- • Strong mechanical diagnostic skills: diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems and fuel/emissions systems.
- • Own basic industry-standard hand and specialty tools; able to maintain a service truck and inventory control.
- • Comfortable working early mornings, evenings, weekends and overtime; able to travel between sites and lift heavy components.
- • Clear communicator—able to work with dispatch, field crews, parts, vendors and complete written records accurately.
Qualifications
- • CDL - A or CDL - B (required)
- • Valid driver’s license (required)
- • High school diploma or GED (preferred)
- • Minimum 1 year field heavy equipment mechanic experience (required)
- • Ability to pass DOT drug screen and background check
- • OSHA 10 preferred; proficiency with Trimble/Telogis or other telematics and basic computer skills; English (required)
What We Offer
- • Competitive hourly pay plus overtime pay (paid weekly or biweekly).
- • Paid manufacturer/dealer technical training and continuing education.
- • Service truck allowance or support for truck upkeep and mileage/per diem for travel.
- • Paid time off and benefits package available (health, dental, vision and retirement options).
- • Tool and uniform/gear support and a safety-focused work environment.
