Heavy Equipment Mechanic Journeyman
About This Role
Join the I-65 Central Project in Louisville, KY as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Journeyman. You’ll maintain, diagnose, and repair heavy construction equipment — including Caterpillar, Liebherr, and Link Belt Crane machines — working on a major highway project. Pay is $40.05/hr plus fringe on straight time and this is a per diem position. Schedule is currently daytime (5:30 AM–5:00 PM, Mon–Sat) with night shifts possible (5:30 PM–5:30 AM). Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years’ heavy equipment diesel mechanic experience and be able to pass a Drug and Alcohol test. This is hands-on, field work — expect troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and full repairs on diesel engines, hydraulics, powertrains and electrical systems.
What You'll Do
- • Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy construction equipment (Caterpillar, Liebherr, Link Belt Crane and similar)
- • Troubleshoot electrical systems, controls, power/fuses and resolve wiring or component failures
- • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, powertrains and fuel systems
- • Service and maintain hydraulic systems: pumps, valves, hoses, cylinders and fittings
- • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and document repairs and parts used
- • Work day or night shifts on-site, coordinate with crew leads, and follow safety and job-site procedures
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic on construction equipment
- • Proven experience with Caterpillar, Liebherr, and Link Belt Crane equipment
- • Strong troubleshooting skills for controls, electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, transmissions and powertrain systems
- • Ability to perform full repairs: remove/replace engines, transmissions, hydraulic components and major assemblies
- • Must pass a Drug and Alcohol test as a condition of hire
- • Able to work assigned shifts (day or night), Monday–Saturday schedule and overtime when required
Qualifications
- • 5+ years heavy equipment diesel mechanic experience (required)
- • Experience working on Caterpillar, Liebherr and Link Belt Crane equipment (required)
- • Ability to pass pre-employment Drug & Alcohol test (required)
- • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to site
- • ASE Heavy-Duty/Equipment certification or Journeyman classification and OSHA 10 (preferred)
