Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic Journeyman
About This Role
Join a major project in Abilene, TX as a Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic Journeyman. You’ll perform field troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance on large earthmoving equipment. Work primarily outdoors on-site maintaining Caterpillar, Liebherr, Xtreme, and Takeuchi machines using diagnostic tools like CAT ET, Cummins INSITE, and Diesel Laptop. This is a per diem position for experienced diesel mechanics with strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving skills. Candidates should have at least 3 years of heavy equipment diesel experience, be comfortable with electrical and hydraulic systems, and be ready for travel to the jobsite.
What You'll Do
- • Perform field troubleshooting and repairs on heavy equipment (engines, powertrains, hydraulics, fuel & emissions)
- • Use diagnostic tools (CAT ET, Cummins INSITE, Diesel Laptop) to identify and fix faults
- • Perform preventative maintenance, scheduled service, and component replacements
- • Diagnose and repair electrical/control systems including sensors, wiring, and modules
- • Work with operators and site leads to prioritize repairs and return equipment to service quickly
- • Document work performed, maintain maintenance logs, and track parts usage
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 3 years heavy equipment diesel mechanic experience preferred
- • Field troubleshooting and hands-on repair skills required
- • Experience with Caterpillar, Liebherr, Xtreme, and Takeuchi equipment
- • Proficient with CAT ET, Cummins INSITE, and Diesel Laptop diagnostic systems
- • Strong mechanical aptitude; ability to troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems
- • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to the project site; must pass drug screen
Qualifications
- • High school diploma or GED preferred
- • ASE diesel or OEM technician certification preferred
- • CDL Class A or ability to obtain preferred but not required
- • Ability to read schematics and use diagnostic software
- • Able to lift 50+ lbs and work in outdoor conditions
- • English proficiency for safety and reporting; bilingual candidates encouraged
