Traveling Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic

Indianapolis, IN

About This Role

Join a hands-on field crew as a traveling Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic based in Indianapolis. You’ll service CAT heavy equipment across the southeastern and midwestern U.S., performing on-site diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs to keep machines running and job sites on schedule. This role requires solid diesel engine and powertrain experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to travel frequently for multi-day service calls. If you like variety, working outdoors, and fixing big machines, this role is a fit — you’ll be the person crews call when downtime threatens deadlines.

What You'll Do

  • Travel to job sites across multiple states to inspect, diagnose and repair CAT heavy equipment on location
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) and corrective repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, powertrains and hydraulic systems
  • Use diagnostic tools and schematics to locate faults, test components, and complete repairs efficiently to minimize downtime
  • Document work performed, parts used and hours on service reports; communicate equipment status to supervisors and site managers
  • Carry and maintain hand tools and diagnostic equipment, order parts as needed, and maintain a clean and safe work area on site

What We're Looking For

  • Heavy Equipment Hydraulic Maintenance — diagnose and repair hydraulic systems and components
  • General Heavy Equipment Maintenance — routine PMs, inspections and on-site troubleshooting
  • Heavy Equipment Diesel Engine Maintenance — repair and overhaul diesel engines and related systems
  • Heavy Equipment Powertrain Maintenance — service drivetrains, axles and final drives
  • Heavy Equipment Transmission Maintenance — diagnose and repair transmissions, torque converters and controls
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with diagnostic tools and electrical/fuel system knowledge; able to work independently on remote sites

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience on heavy equipment diesel machinery; CAT experience preferred
  • Diesel mechanic certification (ASE Medium/Heavy or equivalent) or trade school completion
  • Valid driver’s license; able to travel frequently and work multi-day site calls (overnight stays common)
  • Able to pass background check and drug screen
  • English proficiency for safety and reporting; additional language skills a plus
  • Comfort with climbing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and working outdoors in varying conditions

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay with overtime opportunities and travel pay/per diem
  • Mileage reimbursement or company vehicle when provided; paid travel time between sites
  • Health insurance options and retirement savings plan
  • Paid time off and holiday pay
  • Tool allowance and access to technical training or factory courses
  • Stable schedule of assignments across the Southeast and Midwest with dispatch support
