Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Traveling/Diesel)

About This Role

Join a traveling crew as a Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic based out of Indianapolis, IN. You’ll service CAT heavy equipment across the southeastern and midwestern United States, performing on-site repairs and preventive maintenance to keep machines working and projects on schedule. This role is hands-on: you’ll diagnose diesel engines, troubleshoot hydraulics, powertrains and transmissions, and work in varied jobsite conditions. Expect extended travel between sites, field repairs, and real accountability for minimizing downtime and keeping equipment reliable.

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose and repair CAT heavy equipment diesel engines, powertrains, transmissions and hydraulic systems on-site
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to reduce downtime and extend machine life
  • Travel to job sites across multiple states; perform field repairs using mobile service procedures
  • Use diagnostic tools and electrical test equipment to isolate faults and verify repairs
  • Maintain accurate service records, parts usage logs, and communicate repair status to supervisors
  • Follow safety protocols, secure work areas, and ensure equipment is returned to safe service condition

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience working on CAT heavy equipment or comparable OEM machinery (required)
  • Strong diesel engine repair skills and experience with heavy equipment powertrain and transmission systems
  • Hands-on hydraulic system maintenance and troubleshooting experience
  • Ability to travel extensively, work in the field, and stay on multi-day job sites as needed
  • Comfort using diagnostics, schematics, and technical manuals; strong mechanical troubleshooting skills
  • Physically able to lift heavy parts, work in confined spaces, and perform manual tasks on job sites

Qualifications

  • 3+ years heavy equipment diesel mechanic experience (field/service preferred)
  • ASE Heavy-Duty Diesel or equivalent heavy equipment certification preferred
  • Experience working on CAT machines or factory service training preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (CDL Class A/B preferred)
  • OSHA 10-hour or equivalent safety training preferred
  • English required; Spanish or other language skills a plus
