Motor Grader Operator
About This Role
Join a busy Richmond crew as a Motor Grader Operator working on road, paving, and earthwork projects. You’ll run graders and other heavy gear to shape surfaces, move material, and support paving and excavation tasks. Work is project-based with regular hours and overtime available. This role puts safety and equipment care first. You’ll perform daily checks and basic maintenance, follow field plans and blueprints with foremen, and make on-the-ground decisions to keep jobs moving. There’s room to learn new gear, get training, and move up into lead or foreman roles.
What You'll Do
- • Operate motor graders plus other heavy equipment as assigned (dozers, backhoes, loaders, pavers, rollers) to grade, slope, and finish subgrades and surfaces.
- • Perform daily equipment inspections, cleaning, greasing, and basic adjustments; report defects and coordinate repairs.
- • Review work plans and civil drawings with the field manager or foreman; set grades and follow layout and grade control instructions.
- • Make operational decisions for safe, efficient equipment use; control attachments (blades, buckets, screeds) to meet specs.
- • Follow site safety rules and company policies, including lockout/tagout, traffic control, and confined-space/excavation procedures.
- • Keep clear production and time records; communicate progress and issues to supervisors and crew.
What We're Looking For
- • 3+ years operating heavy construction equipment; solid experience with motor graders is required.
- • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, grade sheets, and basic blueprints.
- • Hands-on equipment maintenance skills: daily checks, greasing, basic troubleshooting and reporting.
- • Experience on paving crews (asphalt/concrete), rollers, and screed operation preferred.
- • Familiarity with GPS grade-control systems and basic site layout tools (string line, level, transit).
- • Proven safety record, reliable attendance, and ability to work outdoors in all weather; willing to work overtime and travel to job sites.
Qualifications
- • Valid driver's license and clean driving record; Class A CDL preferred
- • OSHA 10-hour Construction card or equivalent preferred
- • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
- • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent field experience)
- • Familiarity with GPS grade-control and machine guidance systems
- • English proficiency for safe communication on site; bilingual candidates a plus
What We Offer
- • Overtime available on many projects
- • Paid training, skills development, and clear promotion path
- • Health, dental, and vision insurance options (where eligible)
- • 401(k) retirement plan with company contribution
- • Paid time off and holiday pay
- • Boot/tool allowance and safety gear provided
