Motor Grader Operator

About This Role
Join a local heavy construction crew in Richmond, VA as a Motor Grader Operator. You’ll run graders, dozers, backhoes and other equipment to grade, pave, excavate and prepare sites for asphalt and concrete work. This is a hands-on role focused on safe, efficient operation and routine equipment upkeep. What You'll Do
- • Operate motor graders, dozers, backhoes, pavers, and related heavy equipment to grade, excavate, and prepare surfaces for paving and drainage work.
- • Perform daily pre- and post-shift inspections; clean, grease, oil and complete basic maintenance to keep equipment safe and operational.
- • Review work plans, grade stakes and blueprints with field managers; set grade lines and determine best methods and attachments to complete tasks on time.
- • Make operational judgments on equipment use, attachments and sequencing to maximize productivity while maintaining safety.
- • Follow all site safety procedures and company policies; report hazards, equipment defects or incidents immediately.
- • Assist with paving operations, milling, material placement, site cleanup and any required handwork around machinery when needed.
What We're Looking For
- • 2+ years operating motor graders and other heavy equipment (dozers, backhoes, pavers) on paving or sitework projects.
- • Hands-on knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance: hydraulics, diesel engines, transmissions, fuel/emissions systems, and basic electrical accessories.
- • Ability to read grade stakes, basic blueprints, and follow instructions from supervisors and foremen.
- • Strong safety focus with ability to make sound operational decisions and follow site safety rules and equipment repair procedures.
- • Physically fit for long shifts outdoors, able to climb in/out of equipment, and work in varied weather conditions.
Qualifications
- • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; Class A CDL preferred but not required.
- • Ability to pass DOT physical and drug screen where applicable.
- • OSHA 10 (or OSHA 30 preferred) or willing to obtain.
- • High school diploma or GED preferred.
- • Welding and heavy-equipment maintenance certifications (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, hydraulic or diesel service) are a plus.
- • English required; bilingual Spanish a plus.
