Heavy Equipment Operator

Montgomery, AL $17-$24/hr

About this role

Seeking experienced heavy equipment operators for construction and site work projects across Montgomery, AL. You will run dozers, excavators, graders, loaders and other heavy gear to support excavation, grading, paving prep and material handling on active job sites. This is hands-on field work. Expect daily equipment operation, basic maintenance, loading/unloading materials, working with foremen and crews, and following site safety and grade specifications. Local travel between Montgomery-area sites is required.

What you'll do

  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently: dozer, excavator, motor grader, loader, skid steer, scraper, dump truck, backhoe and screed; use GPS rover for grade work when required.
  • Perform excavation, grading, site prep and paving support tasks according to stakes, grade plans and foreman directions.
  • Load, unload and secure materials on site and for transport; move and place fill, aggregate and other materials.
  • Conduct pre-start inspections, routine equipment checks and basic on-site maintenance; report defects and coordinate repairs.
  • Follow all site safety procedures, maintain good housekeeping, assist the crew with layout, traffic control and site cleanup.

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience operating heavy equipment on civil construction and paving projects (dozer, excavator, grader, loader, skid steer, scraper, dump truck, backhoe).
  • Hands-on ability for loading/unloading material and operating asphalt/paving support equipment (screed, paving attachments).
  • Basic heavy-equipment maintenance skills, including diesel and gasoline engine checks, powertrain and transmission troubleshooting and routine service.
  • Experience using GPS navigation/GPS rover systems for grading and site layout.
  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather, following grade/stake instructions, and communicating effectively with foremen and crew.
  • Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check; reliable transportation to Montgomery-area job sites.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license; clean driving record preferred
  • CDL Class A or B preferred (for dump truck and transport duties)
  • OSHA 10 (or OSHA 30 preferred) safety card
  • DOT medical card (if operating commercial vehicles) preferred
  • NCCER or other heavy equipment/operator certifications a plus
  • Ability to read grade stakes and basic site plans; Spanish language skills helpful
