Heavy Equipment Operator
About This Role
Operate a variety of heavy machines to support excavation, grading, paving and utility installation projects across Chesapeake, VA. You’ll run dozers, excavators, backhoes, loaders and graders to shape sites, move materials and prepare grades per plans. This is a hands‑on, outdoor role that requires daily equipment checks, basic maintenance, and close coordination with the crew and field manager. Safety, dependability and the ability to read simple plans/grade stakes are essential.
What You'll Do
- • Operate dozers, excavators, backhoes, loaders and graders (and attachments) for excavation, grading, paving and utility work.
- • Perform daily pre‑shift and post‑shift equipment inspections; grease, check fluids, clean and report/repair issues as directed.
- • Review daily plans and blueprints or grade stakes; determine safe, efficient work sequence with the field manager.
- • Assist with site layout, material loading/unloading, trenching and final grade work to meet project specs.
- • Follow company safety policies and worksite traffic control procedures; attend toolbox talks and use PPE.
- • Coordinate with crew members and foremen to meet schedules and keep projects on time and within budget.
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 2 years operating heavy construction equipment (dozers, excavators, backhoes, loaders, graders).
- • Proven ability to operate attachments (buckets, blades, rippers, forks) and control machine functions safely.
- • Able to read basic plans, grade stakes and follow written/ verbal instructions on site.
- • Perform routine maintenance (greasing, fluid checks, basic troubleshooting) and keep machines clean.
- • Capable of physical labor outdoors in all weather; lift 50+ lbs and work extended hours when needed.
- • Must pass pre‑employment drug screen, physical and background check; valid driver’s license required.
Qualifications
- • High school diploma or GED preferred.
- • Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Class B) or clean driving record a plus.
- • OSHA 10-hour card preferred; NCCER or other equipment operator certifications a plus.
- • Able to pass DOT drug screen, pre‑employment physical and background check.
- • English required for safe communication on site; Spanish or other languages a plus.
