Heavy Equipment Operator
About This Role
Operate dozers, excavators, loaders, backhoes and graders to support excavation, grading, paving, and utility projects across Richmond, VA. You’ll run equipment and attachments, perform daily inspections and basic maintenance, and follow plans to get the job done safely and on schedule. This is a hands-on role for a reliable operator who reads plans, communicates with the crew, enforces safety rules, and helps keep projects on budget. Expect outdoor work in all weather, steady hours with possible overtime, and a focus on practical skills and teamwork.
What You'll Do
- • Operate various heavy equipment and attachments (dozers, excavators, backhoes, loaders, graders) for excavation, grading, paving and utility work.
- • Perform daily pre- and post-shift equipment inspections, greasing, basic servicing and on-site cleaning to ensure safe operation.
- • Read and follow daily plans, blueprints and grade stakes; coordinate tasks with the foreman and crew for efficient workflow.
- • Use equipment according to safety policies and maintain a clean, organized work area; follow flagging and signaling procedures.
- • Load/unload materials, assist with site prep and cleanup, and communicate equipment status or issues to maintenance/leadership to avoid delays.
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 2 years operating heavy construction equipment (dozer, excavator, loader, backhoe, grader).
- • Proven ability to perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs (greasing, checking fluids, reporting defects).
- • Ability to read plans, grade stakes, and follow directions from supervisors and spotters.
- • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather and handling physically demanding tasks.
- • Valid driver’s license required; must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical and background check.
Qualifications
- • High school diploma or GED preferred.
- • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred if available.
- • OSHA 10-hour construction card or willing to obtain.
- • Operator certification or documented equipment experience (NCCER or equivalent preferred).
- • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical exam, and background check.
- • Able to communicate in English on job site for safety and coordination.
