Motor Grader Operator (Finish Grading) — Damascus, VA

About this role

Experienced heavy equipment operators needed in Damascus, VA to run motor graders for finish and fine grading work. This role focuses on producing accurate slopes and smooth final surfaces on road, site, and earthwork projects. You will work on-site with a crew, follow grade stakes and plans, and perform daily equipment checks. Candidates must have at least 5+ years of motor grader experience and a strong track record of safe, precise grading.

What you'll do

  • Operate motor graders for finish/fine grading to achieve specified slopes, cross-sections, and surface tolerances
  • Set blade, pitch, and moldboard to produce smooth final surfaces; make precise adjustments to match grade stakes and laser/stringline controls
  • Read and follow plans, grade stakes, and surveyor instructions; report discrepancies and confirm elevations before final passes
  • Perform pre- and post-shift equipment inspections and basic maintenance (fluids, filters, blade edges) to keep machines job-ready
  • Coordinate with foremen, surveyors, flaggers, and ground crew to maintain productivity and site safety
  • Keep work area tidy, follow traffic control and site safety procedures, and document completed work and production notes

What we're looking for

  • Minimum 5+ years operating motor graders with demonstrated finish grading ability
  • Proven experience with grader controls, grade interpretation, and slope/finish work
  • Familiarity with other heavy equipment (dozer, loader, excavator, skid steer, dump truck) and basic maintenance skills
  • Ability to read grade stakes, use laser/grade control systems, and follow construction plans
  • Reliable transportation to and from Damascus, VA job sites and consistent on-time attendance
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift/handle materials as needed

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of motor grader finish-grading experience (documented work history or references)
  • Valid driver's license; CDL Class A preferred but not required
  • OSHA 10 (or OSHA 30 preferred) and site safety training preferred
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background check
  • Basic blueprint/grade reading and common construction math; English required, bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
