Heavy Equipment Operator

About This Role

Operate asphalt pavers, rollers, milling machines, backhoes and skid steers on milling and paving jobs across MD. This hands-on role focuses on safe, productive equipment operation and routine upkeep to keep jobs moving on schedule. Pay is $24.00–$27.00 per hour based on experience. You’ll start each day by reviewing plans with the field manager, performing physical work tied to the equipment, and keeping machines cleaned, greased and topped off. Clear, direct communication with crew members and a constant focus on site safety are required to meet daily production goals.

What You'll Do

• • Review daily plans and methods with the field manager and set priorities for the shift.
• • Operate asphalt pavers, rollers, material transfer vehicles, milling machines, backhoes and skid steers safely and productively.
• • Perform physical duties associated with machine operation (hooking up tow lines, raking, shoveling, tamping when needed).
• • Conduct routine equipment maintenance: clean, grease, inspect, and check fluid levels before and after shifts.
• • Maintain a safe work area and communicate clearly with crew to prevent hazards and complete tasks on time.

What We're Looking For

• • Proven experience operating asphalt paving and milling equipment (pavers, rollers, milling machines, skid steers, backhoes).
• • Ability to perform physical, outdoor work in variable weather and on uneven surfaces.
• • Basic mechanical aptitude for preventive maintenance tasks: cleaning, greasing and fluid checks.
• • Strong verbal communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with crew and field manager.
• • Commitment to follow and enforce site safety procedures and PPE requirements.

Qualifications

• • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred if available.
• • OSHA 10 (or higher) preferred.
• • Prior paving/milling certifications or formal equipment training a plus.
• • English proficiency sufficient to communicate safety directions; bilingual candidates a plus.
