Heavy Equipment Operator
About this role
Join a paving and milling crew working across Maryland as a Heavy Equipment Operator. You will run asphalt pavers, rollers, milling machines, backhoes and skid steers on road and site paving projects, perform routine upkeep on equipment, and help the crew meet daily production goals. This role is hands-on and safety-first: you’ll discuss daily plans with the field manager, operate equipment according to plan, perform non-mechanical maintenance (cleaning, greasing, fluid checks), and communicate clearly with other crew members to keep jobs on time and safe.
What you'll do
- • Meet with the field manager each day to review scope, methods, and safety for assigned work.
- • Operate asphalt pavers, rollers, milling machines, backhoes and skid steers for milling and paving operations.
- • Perform physical tasks tied to safe, productive equipment operation (positioning, loading/unloading materials, guiding machines).
- • Conduct routine equipment maintenance: clean machines, grease fittings, check and top fluid levels, and report mechanical issues.
- • Prioritize jobsite safety for all personnel working around equipment; follow and enforce safe work procedures.
- • Communicate clearly with crew members and support teamwork to accomplish daily production targets.
What we're looking for
- • Proven experience operating asphalt pavers, rollers, milling machines, backhoes and skid steers in paving or roadwork environments.
- • Ability to perform preventive maintenance inspections and basic heavy equipment upkeep.
- • Strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with supervisors and crew.
- • Comfort with physical work: climbing on equipment, lifting, and standing for long periods on active job sites.
- • Familiarity with site layout, material handling, and loading/unloading procedures.
- • Commitment to follow and enforce safety procedures and wear required PPE on site.
Qualifications
- • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites
- • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
- • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required
- • Proven equipment operator experience; formal operator certification or vocational training is a plus
- • Able to read job specs, basic site layout, and communicate in English
What we offer
- • Medical, dental and vision insurance options
- • Paid vacation and paid holidays
- • Annual performance bonus program
- • 401(k) retirement plan
- • Site-specific safety orientation and on-the-job training
- • Consistent work on regional milling and paving projects across Maryland
