Screed Operator (Heavy Equipment Operator)

About This Role

Join a road paving crew in Fredericksburg, VA as a Screed Operator. You will run the screed on asphalt paving jobs to deliver a smooth, level, and properly compacted surface. This is hands-on work on site, often outdoors, that directly affects the life of the pavement. You’ll work with the paver operator and ground crew, follow job specs and grades, perform daily equipment checks, and keep safety the top priority. Steady hours, overtime when needed, and on-the-job training available for the right candidate.

What You'll Do

• • Operate screed equipment to control thickness, smoothness and compaction of asphalt layers
• • Monitor material flow and adjust screed settings to maintain consistent paving results
• • Coordinate with paver operator and ground crew to maintain line, grade and production pace
• • Read and follow job specifications, blueprints and grade stakes
• • Perform daily inspections, basic maintenance and cleaning of screed and related equipment
• • Communicate clearly with crew and follow all safety procedures on site

What We're Looking For

• • Minimum 2 years heavy equipment or paving experience; asphalt paving and screed experience preferred
• • Ability to read grades, basic blueprints and follow site specifications
• • Valid driver’s license required; reliable transportation to job sites
• • Strong hand/eye/foot coordination and ability to work outdoors in variable weather
• • Clear verbal communication with crew and foreman; ability to work as part of a team
• • Commitment to safety practices, routine equipment checks and preventive maintenance

Qualifications

• • High school diploma or GED preferred
• • Minimum 2 years related heavy equipment/paving operating experience
• • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required
• • OSHA 10 (preferred) and roadway/flagger certifications a plus
• • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
• • Basic English proficiency for safety and crew communication
