Heavy Equipment Operator
About this role
Short-term, hands-on role for an experienced heavy equipment operator in Palm Beach, FL. You’ll operate a rented backhoe to excavate an approximately 200-foot trench (up to 6 feet deep), assist with base prep and gravel pitch, and position heavy PVC sewer pipe over a continuous 5–8 day window. This project requires a reliable operator who can commit to consecutive days until completion, work safely around excavation and pipe handling, and coordinate with a small crew. Must be comfortable operating and performing basic maintenance on the backhoe and working in trench conditions. Bilingual English/Spanish required.
What you'll do
- • Operate rented backhoe to excavate ~200-foot trench up to 6' deep with consistent grade
- • Assist with laying, spreading and pitching gravel for proper drainage and base prep
- • Safely lower, rig, and position heavy PVC sewer pipe into the trench
- • Perform daily equipment checks, basic maintenance, and report issues promptly
- • Follow trench safety protocols, keep work area tidy, and coordinate with crew for uninterrupted progress
What we're looking for
- • Proven experience operating backhoe and excavator in trenching projects
- • Hands-on experience with excavation/trench work and civil construction tasks
- • Piping installation experience, including handling and setting heavy PVC sewer pipe
- • Ability to load/unload materials, rig and signal for heavy lifts, and troubleshoot common equipment issues
- • Available to commit to 5–8 consecutive work days to complete the project without interruption
Qualifications
- • Bilingual: English and Spanish (required)
- • Operator certification or documented experience operating backhoe/excavator
- • Experience with trench safety practices; competent-person or OSHA trench training preferred
- • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to the job site
- • Willingness to complete site safety orientation before work begins
