Heavy Equipment Operator — Walk-Behind Compactor

About This Role

Per diem Heavy Equipment Operator needed in Abilene, TX to run walk-behind compactors and other light construction equipment. This is a hands-on role: you’ll compact soil and base material, follow site layout and safety plans, and keep equipment in working order. You’ll work alongside site crews on short-term assignments. Expect outdoor work, tight schedules, and the need to enforce safety and cleanliness on site. Reliable attendance and solid equipment-handling skills are required for immediate openings.

What You'll Do

• • Operate walk-behind compactors and other light equipment safely and efficiently on site
• • Follow site layout and compaction plans to achieve required densities and grades
• • Perform basic daily maintenance and pre-/post-shift equipment checks
• • Enforce safety procedures, wear PPE, and report hazards or equipment issues
• • Assist with loading/unloading materials and inventory control as needed
• • Keep work area clean and organized; support general site clean-up tasks

What We're Looking For

• • Proven experience operating walk-behind compactors and light construction equipment
• • Knowledge of loading/unloading material, inventory control, and site layout
• • Ability to enforce safety procedures and work with a crew under direction
• • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather and lifting moderate loads
• • Basic equipment maintenance skills (checks, fueling, minor adjustments)

Qualifications

• • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to/from reporting location
• • Minimum 1 year operating walk-behind compactors or similar light equipment
• • Ability to pass background check and drug screen
• • OSHA 10-hour card preferred but not required
• • Comfort reading basic site plans and following supervisor directions
