HVAC Technician III

About This Role

Experienced HVAC Technician III needed to install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair campus HVAC and refrigeration systems in Fairfax, VA. Work under limited supervision on chillers, cooling towers, DX units, hydronic systems and commercial refrigeration while following university safety and maintenance procedures. This is an essential personnel role: you will perform preventive maintenance, seasonal start-up/shutdown, system analysis, documentation and occasional snow removal. Must be able to drive and maintain a work vehicle, handle materials, complete work orders, and work hands-on across multiple buildings on campus.

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and control problems; test components and recommend/perform repairs
  • Maintain and repair cooling towers, chilled/hot water piping and controls, DX units, chillers and commercial refrigeration (walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines)
  • Install and service motors, pumps, compressors, starters, valves and HVAC control devices; make initial settings and final adjustments
  • Perform preventive maintenance, seasonal start-up/shutdown, system adjustments and routine inspections; document work in electronic work orders
  • Drive and maintain a supplied work vehicle, pick up materials, keep tools and vehicle organized, and complete required paperwork and communications
  • Follow safety procedures, report hazards or accidents, perform site cleanup, and respond as essential personnel for snow removal and emergency tasks

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial/industrial HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Proven ability to work with chillers, cooling towers, hydronic systems, DX units and commercial refrigeration
  • Skill with electrical controls, pneumatic controls, motor and compressor maintenance, and basic control programming/troubleshooting
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance, seasonal start-up/shutdown and system balancing/adjustments
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment, work from ladders, and perform physical tasks in varied weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable driving record for fleet vehicle use

Qualifications

  • EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification
  • OSHA 10 (or equivalent) preferred; safety training required
  • Technical certificate or equivalent experience in HVAC/Refrigeration or related trade
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to be insured on a university vehicle
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen
  • English required; Spanish or other language skills a plus
