About This Role

Pipelayer needed in Chesapeake, VA for steady underground utility work. You’ll install, grade, and join sewer, storm, and water pipe on municipal and commercial jobsites. Pay is $25–35/hr DOE with overtime available. This is physical, hands-on work outside in all seasons. You’ll work with a crew, follow site plans and grade stakes, operate or assist with small equipment, and be expected to work safely and reliably. Previous pipelaying or trenching experience is required.

What You'll Do

  • Read grade stakes and layout to set pipe to proper slope and alignment
  • Excavate and prepare trenches, set pipe bedding, lay and join pipe (concrete, PVC, HDPE), and backfill to spec
  • Operate hand tools and light equipment (plate compactors, saws, small loaders) and assist equipment operators
  • Perform compaction, bedding, and restoration of trench areas (gravel, asphalt, concrete)
  • Follow traffic control plans, set up cones/signs, and maintain a safe work zone
  • Inspect installed lines for grade and alignment; report issues and assist with corrective work

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years pipelaying, utility, or heavy civil experience on trenches and underground pipe
  • Able to read basic plans, grade stakes, and measure slopes with level or grade rod
  • Comfortable lifting 50+ lbs, working in confined spaces, and performing repetitive physical tasks
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation to jobsite, and ability to pass drug screen and background check
  • Willingness to work early starts, overtime, and occasional weekend shifts

Qualifications

  • OSHA-10 (required)
  • Flagger/MUTCD certification (preferred)
  • Confined Space Awareness or Entry training (preferred)
  • CPR/First Aid (preferred)
  • English required; Spanish-speaking workers encouraged
