Assistant Project Manager — Heavy Civil (Roanoke, VA)
About This Role
Join a heavy civil infrastructure team in Roanoke, VA as an Assistant Project Manager supporting mass grading, underground utilities, and site development. This is a hands-on role that mixes field time with office/project controls work — ideal for someone who wants both dirt time and project management experience. You will work directly with Project Managers and Superintendents to keep projects moving: tracking labor, equipment and materials, coordinating subs and trucking, participating in QC, maintaining as-builts and submittals, and helping prepare pay applications and estimates. Expect to lead daily toolbox talks and occasional equipment operation or manual labor when needed.
What You'll Do
- • Support Project Managers and Superintendents with day-to-day project execution and field coordination.
- • Track labor, equipment hours, material usage, production rates and assist with cost estimates and pay applications.
- • Schedule and coordinate subcontractors, trucking, on-site deliveries and sequencing to keep work on track.
- • Perform quality control checks for grading and pipe work; maintain and update as-built drawings and submittals.
- • Lead weekly safety meetings and daily toolbox talks; enforce site safety procedures.
- • Operate heavy equipment or perform manual labor occasionally to support production and understand site conditions.
What We're Looking For
- • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent work experience; or trade experience approved by management.
- • Minimum 5 years of site work and grading experience, including at least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role (or equivalent experience).
- • Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and contract documents.
- • Strong verbal and written communication, organization, and basic project controls skills.
- • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); willing to learn Trimble GPS, HCSS, Bluebeam, Primavera, or Timberline within 6 months.
- • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, work outdoors in varying weather, and enter/exist deep excavations or confined spaces as required.
Qualifications
- • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience (preferred).
- • OSHA 10 (required) or OSHA 30 (preferred); First Aid/CPR recommended.
- • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and ability to travel to job sites.
- • Experience with Trimble GPS systems, Bluebeam, Procore, HCSS, Primavera or similar construction software (preferred).
- • Ability to safely operate or assist with heavy equipment; operator certifications are a plus.
- • Comfort working outdoors on uneven terrain and following all safety and permit requirements.
What We Offer
- • Competitive pay with overtime opportunities (local pay rates vary by project).
- • Medical, dental and vision insurance options.
- • 401(k) plan with employer match and paid time off + paid holidays.
- • Hands-on training, equipment/operator training, and opportunities for advancement into PM or superintendent roles.
- • Company-provided PPE and mileage reimbursement or company vehicle for project travel.
