Assistant Project Manager (Heavy Civil)
About this role
Join a heavy civil infrastructure crew based in Roanoke, VA supporting mass grading, underground utilities, and site development across the NC/Roanoke region. This hands-on role blends time in the field with project controls, documentation, and subcontractor coordination. You will work alongside Project Managers and Superintendents to keep projects running on schedule and on budget. Expect daily site visits, progress tracking, safety leadership, and direct involvement with cost documentation and QC for grading and pipe work — great for someone who likes both the office and the job site.
What you'll do
- • Support Project Managers and Superintendents with daily project management, site coordination, and execution
- • Track labor, equipment, and materials; assist with cost estimates, pay applications, and job-cost reporting
- • Coordinate subcontractors, trucking, deliveries, and on-site schedules to keep work on track
- • Perform and document quality control inspections for grading and pipe installation; maintain as-built drawings and submittals
- • Lead safety meetings and daily toolbox talks; enforce site safety procedures
- • Occasionally operate heavy equipment and perform manual labor when needed
What we're looking for
- • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- • Minimum 5 years of site work and grading experience, including at least 1 year in a supervisory or leadership role (or equivalent experience)
- • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and contract documents
- • Strong verbal and written communication; proven organizational and time-management skills
- • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); willingness to learn Trimble GPS, Bluebeam, HCSS, Primavera, and similar tools within six months
- • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work outdoors in varied weather, and safely enter excavations/confined spaces
Qualifications
- • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent field experience
- • 5+ years heavy civil/site work and grading; 1+ year supervisory experience preferred
- • Valid driver’s license and eligible to operate a company vehicle for project travel
- • Proficient in Microsoft Office; willingness to learn Trimble GPS, Bluebeam, HCSS, Primavera, Timberline
- • OSHA 10 (or OSHA 30) and equipment operator certifications preferred
- • Able to lift 50 lbs and safely enter deep excavations/confined spaces
