QA/QC Manager — Asphalt Field Operations

About This Role

Join a Richmond, VA crew as a hands-on QA/QC Manager for asphalt field operations. You’ll run daily field and lab tests, perform nuclear gauge and core testing, and make quick, accurate calls so crews can keep paving on schedule. This is a field-focused, per diem role paying up to $71,000/yr. You’ll work on DOT and contract projects, coordinate with field managers and roller operators, and ensure all work meets federal, state, and local specs. VDOT Asphalt Level 1 & 2 and Nuclear Radiation Safety certifications are required.

What You'll Do

• • Run daily field and lab quality control tests (nuclear gauge, core sampling, density, gradation) and document results
• • Develop, follow and update asphalt QC procedures for field operations
• • Coordinate testing and compliance activities with DOT/agency reps and consulting firms on projects
• • Work directly with field managers and roller operators to correct issues and ensure contract specs are met
• • Receive and analyze DOT/consultant reports; verify tests conform to contract and project requirements
• • Perform timely nuclear gauge and core testing and relay results to the project team for decision-making

What We're Looking For

• • VDOT Asphalt Field Level 1 & Level 2 certifications required
• • Nuclear Radiation Safety Certificate required or able to complete within 1 week of hire
• • 1–2 years’ QC/QA experience in asphalt field testing (3–5 years preferred)
• • Hands-on knowledge of lab protocols, core testing, nuclear gauge operation, and test documentation
• • Strong written and verbal communication; clear record-keeping and report interpretation
• • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for job sites

Qualifications

• • VDOT Asphalt Field Level 1 certification
• • VDOT Asphalt Field Level 2 certification
• • Nuclear Radiation Safety Certificate (or ability to obtain within 1 week)
• • High school diploma or GED
• • Valid U.S. driver’s license
• • English — conversational (ability to read reports and communicate with crews and agencies)
