Asphalt Lab Technician
About this role
Join a busy plant and quarry lab in Jessup, MD as an Asphalt Lab Technician performing daily quality control testing and mix design development for asphalt, concrete, and quarry products. You will use established lab protocols and technical data to make sure products meet federal, state, and local specifications. This hands-on role works closely with plant control rooms, production crews, and government agency representatives. Expect a practical, safety-first environment where clear test results and accurate mix designs keep projects moving and compliant.
What you'll do
- • Run daily QC tests on asphalt, concrete, and quarry materials to confirm compliance with project and regulatory specs.
- • Develop, document, and follow quality control procedures and mix designs for asphalt and concrete operations.
- • Coordinate QC activities and testing schedules with plant control rooms, production staff, and external agency representatives.
- • Conduct lab experiments using established scientific protocols and properly record and store test data.
- • Review and analyze technical data from sales and technical representatives; recommend production adjustments when required.
- • Prepare test reports, maintain lab equipment and calibration records, and perform other job-related tasks as assigned.
What we're looking for
- • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline or equivalent on-the-job experience.
- • 1–2 years of lab or QC experience required; 3–5 years preferred, ideally in asphalt, concrete, or quarry operations.
- • Knowledge of AASHTO/ASTM test methods and standard lab scientific protocols.
- • Strong math, analytical, and data-recording skills; ability to interpret technical specifications and test results.
- • Experience developing and enforcing inspection and test plans (ITPs) and working with federal, state, and local regulations (NEPA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, etc.).
- • Comfortable coordinating with plant operations and government agency representatives; reliable communication and record-keeping.
Qualifications
- • Bachelor’s degree in science/engineering or equivalent experience (required)
- • 1–3+ years performing AASHTO/ASTM laboratory tests (preferred)
- • Familiarity with QA/QC asphalt and concrete mix design procedures
- • Proficient with lab data systems and Microsoft Office
- • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to nearby sites when required
