Richmond, VA

About This Role

Seeking a hands-on heavy civil superintendent in Richmond, VA to lead day-to-day field operations on grading, excavation, and site heavy work. You’ll run crews and subs, keep projects on schedule and to spec, and enforce safety and quality standards in the field. This is a field-first role: you’ll handle site logistics, resource allocation, daily coordination with project managers and engineers, and manage billing and budget items as needed. Competitive pay (DOE), steady local and regional work, and overtime available for the right candidate.

What You'll Do

  • Lead daily heavy civil field operations: manage crews, subcontractors, and on-site tasks (grading, excavation, mass earthwork).
  • Coordinate daily with project managers, engineers, surveyors and subcontractors on schedule, sequencing, and technical issues.
  • Enforce safety protocols, site-specific safety plans, and quality control; conduct toolbox talks and document safety compliance.
  • Oversee site logistics and resource allocation: equipment placement, material deliveries, traffic control and staging.
  • Review and interpret civil plans and survey stakes; ensure work meets specifications and tolerance requirements.
  • Track job progress, submit daily reports, assist with billing, change orders, and basic budget oversight.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years supervising heavy civil construction (grading, excavation, earthwork) or equivalent field experience.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret civil drawings, plans, and land surveying stakes.
  • Strong construction project management skills: scheduling, crew coordination, and on-site problem solving.
  • Experience enforcing safety procedures and leading safety programs in the field.
  • Familiarity with billing, change order documentation, and basic budget management.
  • Hands-on knowledge of equipment operations and site logistics for commercial and civil projects.

Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license; clean driving record. CDL Class A preferred but not required.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Able to read and interpret civil survey data and construction plans.
  • English required; Spanish or other language skills a plus.

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience (DOE) plus overtime opportunities.
  • Health insurance options (medical/dental/vision) and paid time off.
  • Retirement plan / 401(k) with employer match or contribution (where offered).
  • Steady local and regional work with clear schedules and jobsite support.
  • Tool/boots allowance and training/certification reimbursement for required credentials.
