We need an experienced asphalt superintendent based in Chesapeake, VA to run paving operations in Fairfax and surrounding Tidewater areas. You’ll lead crews on site, coordinate equipment and materials, and make sure every mat meets spec and is compacted right. This is a hands-on foreman role — you’ll be in the field directing operators, working with density techs and QC, enforcing safety, and keeping projects on schedule. If you know pavers, rollers, transfer machines and how to hit grade and density targets, this job is for you.
What You'll Do
- • Lead and manage asphalt paving crews on site; set daily work plans and direct operators and lute crews
- • Coordinate scheduling of crews, equipment, haul trucks, and materials to meet production goals
- • Monitor pavement quality and compaction; work with Asphalt Density Technician and Paving QC to meet specs
- • Ensure equipment is staged and operated correctly (paver, screed, transfer machine, rollers, skid steers)
- • Enforce safety standards, maintain daily logs, report site issues, and coordinate with project management and suppliers
What We're Looking For
- • 5+ years hands-on asphalt paving experience with at least 2 years supervising field crews
- • Proven ability to run paver operations and supervise screed operators, lute men, and transfer machine crews
- • Practical knowledge of asphalt mixes, compaction procedures, density testing, and paving QC
- • Experience coordinating equipment (pavers, rollers, transfer machines, skid steers) and material deliveries
- • Able to read plans, understand grade control, and communicate progress to project leads
- • Valid driver’s license, able to pass drug screen; reliable transportation to job sites
Qualifications
- • Asphalt Density Technician certification (or experience working with certified density techs)
- • Paving Quality Control Technician training or equivalent field experience
- • Screed Operator and Paving Equipment Operator experience/certification
- • OSHA 10-hour construction safety card (preferred)
- • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- • English proficiency for on-site communication (Spanish helpful)
What We Offer
- • Weekly pay and steady work in the Tidewater region
- • Overtime pay available
- • Health benefits (medical, dental, vision) and paid time off
- • 401(k) or retirement plan options
- • Paid safety training and certification support
- • Tools and equipment allowances or company-provided safety gear
