About This Role

Join a civil highway and bridge construction crew in Louisville, KY as a Survey Rodman/Instrument Man. This is an entry-level helper position paying $20/hr for a consistent 50-hour workweek (Monday–Friday). You will work on major infrastructure projects with steady hours and a clear path to move up in the surveying trade. We will train the right candidate and provide hands-on mentorship in field surveying tasks, instrument operation, and site layout. This is a long-term project with the potential to transfer to other projects after completion. Note: No per diem or travel assistance is provided at this time.

What You'll Do

  • Assist the instrument man with setup and operation of total stations, levels, and GPS equipment.
  • Hold rod/grade and perform stakeout and layout per civil drawings and project stake plans.
  • Read and interpret construction and civil drawings to verify layout points and elevations.
  • Record measurements and field notes accurately; maintain and deliver survey data to the crew.
  • Maintain and care for survey instruments, prisms, rods and hand tools; transport equipment to/from site.
  • Follow site safety plans, flagging/traffic control protocols, and directions from crew leads and inspectors.

What We're Looking For

  • Basic understanding of drawing reading/interpretation and civil plan layout or willingness to learn on the job.
  • Hands-on experience or interest in land surveying, site layout, and general construction work.
  • Ability to perform physical labor in outdoor conditions — standing, lifting, walking over rough ground.
  • Good attention to detail, dependable attendance, and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Comfortable using basic hand tools and recording measurements; prior exposure to GPS/total station a plus but not required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to Louisville jobsite.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check if required.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather and lifting up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Basic math and measurement skills; able to read tape measures, levels, and simple plans.
  • Willing to obtain OSHA 10 or other site-required safety certifications when requested.
