Full Time
Surveyor (Layout Technician)
About This Role
Join a Houston-based construction layout team as a hands-on Surveyor / Layout Technician. You’ll run and maintain Trimble or Leica instruments, collect and verify field data, and lay out control and construction points to keep projects accurate and on schedule. This role is field-first — expect outdoor work on civil sites with varied terrain and tasks. You’ll work directly with crews and project teams to interpret plans, resolve field conflicts, and document as-built conditions. Technicians who show strong technical skill and leadership may take on more complex layout responsibilities and lead layout operations on larger jobsites.
What You'll Do
- • Set up, operate, and maintain survey instruments and data collectors (Trimble/Leica) to perform layout and control work.
- • Read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications; translate designs to the field and mark grades, offsets, and control points.
- • Collect, record, and check field data; prepare and deliver accurate field notes, stakeout reports, and as-built documentation.
- • Use AutoCAD and Civil 3D (and related software) to review plans, process survey data, and produce layout files or drawings for crews.
- • Coordinate with foremen, superintendents, and other trades to resolve layout issues, ensure safety, and maintain project schedules.
- • Perform regular equipment checks, basic troubleshooting, and routine care for survey tools and data collectors.
What We're Looking For
- • High school diploma or GED required; technical coursework or certificate in surveying preferred.
- • Previous layout/survey experience on civil construction projects required (road, site, utilities, or heavy civil preferred).
- • Proficiency with Trimble or Leica survey instruments and data collectors; experience processing survey data.
- • Skilled in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for layout and documentation; able to produce and follow stakeout files.
- • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and grading plans; strong attention to detail.
- • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation to jobsites, and ability to pass drug screening where required.
Qualifications
- • Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record
- • Proficiency with Trimble or Leica systems and common data collectors
- • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D (production and field workflows)
- • High school diploma or GED; surveying certificate or technical coursework preferred
- • English required (verbal and written); additional languages a plus
- • OSHA 10-hour preferred or willingness to obtain
What We Offer
- • Competitive pay with overtime opportunities and regular hours on many projects.
- • Health, dental, and vision insurance options (plan details provided on interview).
- • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching and paid time off.
- • Paid safety and technical training: Civil 3D, instrument manufacturer training, and on-the-job mentoring.
- • Tool/equipment allowance and reimbursement for job-related travel or mileage when required.
