Survey Party Chief (Lead Surveyor)

About This Role

Survey Party Chief — Lead survey party chief overseeing field layout, safety, and quality on construction and industrial sites in MS. You will supervise survey crews, plan daily tasks, run toolbox talks, and ensure accurate layout and documentation per project specs and drawings. This is a hands-on lead role. Expect to run instruments (total station/GNSS), perform and check layout, track quantities, coordinate tools/materials, review timecards, and complete crew performance reviews. Pay up to $40/hr plus overtime; work can include irregular hours, heights, confined spaces, and outdoor conditions.

What You'll Do

  • Perform and supervise all field layout and quality-check functions using total stations, GNSS/GPS and levels
  • Plan daily work, assign tasks to crew members, provide on-the-job training and conduct toolbox talks on safety and methods
  • Read and verify project drawings/specs; set control, stakeout points, and verify as-built locations
  • Coordinate tools, materials and equipment with warehouse, purchasing and supervisors to keep crews productive
  • Track and report daily/weekly quantities of work, review timecards for correct hours and phase coding, and report progress
  • Complete performance reviews, coach crew members, and enforce site safety and quality standards

What We're Looking For

  • Proven field experience leading a survey crew on construction/industrial sites (typically 3–5+ years)
  • Hands-on skill with total stations, GNSS/GPS, levels and practical surveying methods; able to perform layout and QA checks
  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, plans and construction specs; strong measuring and layout accuracy
  • Comfort working in harsh outdoor environments, heights, confined spaces and on irregular schedules (OT, weekends)
  • Reliable communicator and leader — give clear instructions, keep crews safe, and document work accurately
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolds, and pass pre-access drug/alcohol testing and fit-for-duty medical

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years total field survey experience with demonstrated leadership on construction sites
  • Proficiency with total stations, GNSS/GPS, levels and AutoCAD/Civil 3D or similar
  • Valid driver's license and dependable transportation
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction card preferred; First Aid/CPR preferred
  • Ability to pass pre-access drug/alcohol screen and fit-for-duty medical
