About This Role

Join a field crew as a Surveyor Assistant in Abilene, TX. You’ll support the Party Chief on construction and industrial projects by performing layout, measurements, and hands-on site work. This is active outdoor work — expect varied terrain, weather, and industrial job sites. Day-to-day you’ll set up and maintain survey instruments, mark elevations and grades, cut brush, carry stakes and pins, and verify work meets standards. This is a per diem position that requires reliable transportation, basic surveying skills, and the ability to work irregular hours, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.

What You'll Do

  • Help plan, diagram, and lay out field survey work under the Party Chief's direction
  • Set up, operate, and maintain electronic and manual survey instruments and chains
  • Mark and install elevations, stakes, pins, and right-of-way markers neatly and accurately
  • Perform manual site labor: cutting brush, carrying stakes, moving materials, and marking grades
  • Inspect and check subordinate work for compliance with survey standards and accuracy
  • Work safely in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather and site conditions

What We're Looking For

  • Experience on surveying crews or as a surveying journeyman in construction/industrial settings preferred
  • Ability to read drawings, interpret civil layouts, and follow written and oral instructions
  • Capable of physical labor: climb ladders/scaffolds, work at heights, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and basic survey instruments; able to set up electronic equipment
  • Available for irregular hours, overtime, weekends, and travel to different job sites; must pass drug/alcohol screen

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license with reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass pre-access drug/alcohol testing, fit-for-duty medical, and background check
  • OSHA 10-hour (preferred) or comparable safety training
  • Own basic hand and layout tools required for the position
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills for crew coordination
