Surveyor (Field Crew Chief)

Nashville, TN Up to $54/hr

About This Role

Join our team as a Surveyor in Nashville, TN and take charge of field layouts, establish grades and working lines, and lead surveying activities on commercial and civil construction projects. This is hands-on work — you’ll spend time in the field operating data collectors, total stations, digital levels, and using Carlson software to ensure accurate site layout. We’re looking for a dependable professional who can supervise a crew or rodman, coordinate subcontractor surveying work as needed, read plans accurately, and follow safety and drug-free site policies. Pay is competitive — up to $54/hour — with steady project work in the Nashville area.

What You'll Do

  • Perform field layouts and set exterior/interior grade and working lines for contractors and crafts
  • Operate and maintain surveying instruments (total stations, data collectors, digital levels) and use Carlson software for field data
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and layout plans to ensure accurate stakeout
  • Supervise and train crew members (Rodman) and oversee assigned subcontractor surveying activities
  • Document daily field activities, maintain clear survey notes, as-builts, and record measurements
  • Follow site safety protocols, maintain a drug-free work environment, and enforce PPE requirements

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Field Engineer, Survey Crew Chief, or equivalent (preferred)
  • Proven ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications
  • Hands-on experience with electronic/robotic total stations, data collectors, digital levels, tripods, prisms, and Carlson software
  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather, at elevated heights, and lifting up to 70 lbs regularly
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to coordinate with foremen, subcontractors, and crews
  • Solid math skills (algebra, trigonometry) and ability to solve field layout problems on site

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school coursework a plus
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • OSHA 10-hour (or equivalent) preferred
  • Experience with Carlson software and common data collectors
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and comply with drug-free site policy
  • Licensed Surveyor in Tennessee preferred but not required

What We Offer

  • Pay up to $54/hour (depending on experience)
  • Overtime pay for hours over 40/week
  • Medical insurance options
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Paid time off and holiday pay
  • Tool/equipment allowance and training on survey technology
