Heavy Equipment Mechanic
About This Role
Join a hands-on crew as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic in Hampton, VA. You’ll keep construction machines running—diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions and electrical systems to minimize downtime and keep projects on schedule. This is a per diem field role with travel between job sites and the chance to work with a variety of heavy equipment. You’ll work closely with field crews, dispatch and parts teams to order parts, set repair schedules and document work. Be prepared for early starts, occasional nights/weekends and overtime when needed. Paid training and opportunities to pass knowledge on to others are part of the role.
What You'll Do
- • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, powertrains, transmissions, hydrostatic drives, hydraulic systems and electrical controls on heavy construction equipment.
- • Provide technical support to field personnel by phone, email and on-site; communicate repair status with dispatch and parts teams.
- • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMs), complete quality checks, recommend downtime windows and create parts orders.
- • Maintain service truck, tools and parts inventory; keep work area clean and records accurate.
- • Participate in dealer/manufacturer technical training and share knowledge with other mechanics; document repairs to minimize repeat work.
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 1 year field experience repairing heavy construction equipment (diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions).
- • Strong diagnostic skills with hydraulic, electrical and engine systems on modern construction equipment.
- • Familiarity with diagnostic software and tools preferred (Cat ET, Volvo Prosis, Tech Tool, Cummins InSite).
- • Basic oxy/acetylene torch skills and stick welding preferred.
- • Valid driver’s license required; must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- • Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and overtime; able to travel between sites (per diem position).
Qualifications
- • High school diploma or GED required; trade school or technical training preferred.
- • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- • Experience or certification using Cat ET, Volvo Prosis, Tech Tool, Cummins InSite preferred.
- • Basic OXY/Acetylene torch and stick welding skills preferred.
- • Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- • Familiar with Hours of Service (HOS) and telematics systems (Trimble/Telogis) and able to follow safety policies; conversational English for job-site communication.
