Heavy Equipment Mechanic

About This Role

Join a Richmond, VA crew as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and keep construction machines running on schedule. You’ll use a service truck to respond to job sites, diagnose hydraulic, electrical, and engine issues, and complete repairs to minimize downtime. This is a per diem, hourly field role that requires hands-on troubleshooting, clear communication with dispatch and field staff, and willingness to work variable hours including early mornings, evenings and overtime. Manufacturer training and on-the-job technical development are part of the job.

What You'll Do

  • Respond to job sites from a service truck to diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics and powertrain systems.
  • Provide technical support to field personnel, dispatch, and internal teams by phone, email, or in person.
  • Order parts, arrange repair downtime, and coordinate with parts staff and Field Services Dispatcher to ensure timely repairs.
  • Perform quality checks after repairs to prevent repeat work and report deficiencies to improve the PM program.
  • Participate in manufacturer/dealer technical training and share knowledge with other mechanics.
  • Keep service truck, tools and paperwork clean and organized; comply with HOS, Trimble/Telogis and company safety policies.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 1 year field experience repairing heavy construction equipment.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot diesel engines, transmissions/powertrains, hydrostatic drives and hydraulic systems.
  • Diagnostic capability with hydraulic, electrical and engine systems on modern equipment.
  • Comfortable working from a service truck on active job sites and communicating with dispatch/field teams.
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to work early mornings/evenings/weekends and overtime, and pass drug screen/background check.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; trade school preferred
  • Familiarity with diagnostic software (Caterpillar ET, SIS, Volvo Prosis, Tech Tool, Cummins InSite) preferred
  • Basic OXY/Acetylene torch and stick welding skills preferred
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment fuel/emissions systems, hydraulic maintenance and preventive maintenance inspections
  • Must meet HOS/Trimble/Telogis requirements where applicable
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
