Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Abilene, TX $24-$37/hr

About this role

Join our team in Abilene, TX as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. You will independently troubleshoot, maintain and repair production machinery to keep equipment running and minimize downtime. Work closely with machine operators and production management to diagnose problems, perform preventive maintenance, and support continuous operations. This is a per diem position that requires working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather. Expect overtime, nights, and weekends as workload demands. Safety, clear communication, and hands-on mechanical skills are essential.

What you'll do

  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, control, mechanical, hydraulic, and diesel systems on production machinery.
  • Set up, run, troubleshoot and tear down production machinery; keep designated equipment in running condition.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and follow PM procedures to minimize downtime.
  • Communicate equipment status and repair needs to machine operators and production management.
  • Inspect completed work for compliance with plans, specifications and safety standards; identify and correct deficiencies.
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces, follow permit and site safety procedures, and maintain accurate maintenance records.

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience troubleshooting controls, electrical systems, hydraulics, and mechanical components on heavy or production machinery.
  • Hands-on experience with diesel engines, powertrain and transmission maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints and perform precise measurements.
  • Proficient with electrical test meters, hand and power tools, and layout/measurement tools.
  • Strong communication skills; able to coordinate with operators and management and document work clearly.
  • Must supply basic mechanic tool set, meet physical demands of the job, and be available for flexible hours including overtime, nights, and weekends.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous heavy equipment or production machinery experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • OSHA 10 or equivalent safety training preferred.
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen.
  • Able to work at heights and in confined spaces and lift heavy loads as required.
