Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Abilene, TX $24-$37/hr

About this role

Join a per diem crew in Abilene, TX as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. You’ll work independently to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair production machinery to keep operations running safely and on schedule. You’ll perform preventive maintenance, set up and tear down equipment, work closely with machine operators and production management, and inspect work for compliance with plans and safety standards. This role requires hands-on mechanical and electrical skills and the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather.

What you'll do

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, diesel engine, transmission and control system issues on production machinery
  • Set up, run, troubleshoot, and tear down production machinery during shifts and production changes
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections to minimize downtime and extend equipment life
  • Communicate machine status and issues clearly to machine operators and production management
  • Inspect completed work for compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards and take corrective action as needed
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors; follow and enforce safety procedures on every task

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience with mechanical, hydraulic and diesel engine maintenance and powertrain or transmission work
  • Skilled troubleshooting of electrical systems and controls (including safety circuits, amperage issues, and wear-related faults)
  • Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance inspections and PM procedures to reduce downtime
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and measurement tools; estimate sizes, distances, materials and time
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools and electrical test equipment
  • Clear communicator who can coordinate with operators and management and enforce safety and regulatory requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent field experience accepted
  • Previous experience in heavy equipment or production machinery maintenance
  • Must have required basic hand and power tools
  • Able to climb and work at heights (may exceed 200 ft) and enter confined spaces
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather and work overtime, nights, and weekends as required
  • Familiarity with enforcing safety procedures and complying with local, state, and federal regulations
