Heavy Equipment Mechanic — Shipyard Crane
About This Role
Join a shipyard crew in Houma, LA as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic focused on hydraulic lattice boom cranes. You’ll perform hands-on maintenance and repairs on hydraulic crane systems in a shipyard environment. This is a per diem position paying $29–$42/hr, with travel/per diem pay provided. Daily work includes troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic systems, rebuilding gearboxes and pumps, and assembling lattice booms. Dredging equipment experience is a plus — if you’ve worked on dredges or marine cranes, you’ll be a strong fit. Expect outdoor work, shipyard access protocols, and a practical, safety-first crew.
What You'll Do
- • Inspect, maintain, and repair hydraulic lattice boom cranes and associated systems in a shipyard setting
- • Troubleshoot mechanical and hydraulic issues (pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, fittings) and perform field repairs
- • Disassemble and assemble lattice boom sections and perform rigging for repairs or replacement
- • Repair and rebuild gearboxes, drive components, and related mechanical systems
- • Perform preventative maintenance, routine inspections, and document work orders and parts used
- • Work with riggers and operators to test crane functions and confirm safe operation after repairs
What We're Looking For
- • Proven experience with hydraulic lattice boom crane maintenance and repair
- • Strong hydraulic skills: pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, fittings, and troubleshooting
- • Mechanical troubleshooting experience with gearboxes, general heavy equipment components, and pumps
- • Hands-on experience with lattice boom assembly and basic crane operation
- • Comfortable working in a shipyard/marine environment; dredging equipment experience is a plus
- • Ability to work outdoors, lift up to 50 lbs, follow safety procedures, and pass site security checks
Qualifications
- • Fluent in English (required)
- • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- • TWIC card or willingness to obtain (preferred for shipyard/port access)
- • OSHA 10 (or OSHA 30 preferred)
- • Willingness to travel and work per diem assignments
