Heavy Equipment Operator — Geostructural Division

About this role

Join a geostructural crew based in Walterboro, SC as a Heavy Equipment Operator. This hands-on role requires safe, efficient operation of dozers, graders, excavators and loaders while meeting production and quality targets. You’ll work outdoors often, on uneven terrain, and must be willing to travel frequently for projects. You’ll be expected to complete daily inspection logs and preventative maintenance checks, read and apply civil plans and soil/compaction requirements, troubleshoot machine control systems, and mentor apprentices and operator techs. The role focuses on safety, quality, production, and practical problem solving in the field.

What you'll do

• • Operate heavy equipment (grader, dozer, excavator, loader, skid steer, backhoe) safely and efficiently to meet production and quality goals
• • Complete daily inspection logs and preventive maintenance checks; report mechanical or control issues to project supervision
• • Read and follow civil plans, set grades, verify drainage and compaction requirements, and make field layout adjustments as needed
• • Troubleshoot and work with machine control/GPS systems; communicate technology or performance issues to the team
• • Lead and coach apprentices/operator techs on best practices, safety, and efficient operation to improve crew performance
• • Maintain a safety-first worksite: identify hazards, enforce PPE use, and follow site-specific safety plans and procedures

What we're looking for

• • Proven experience operating heavy equipment on site development, grading, or earthmoving projects
• • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, set stakes/grades, and understand soil/compaction requirements
• • Experience with machine control/GPS systems and basic troubleshooting of those systems
• • Strong communication skills — give clear instructions, report field conditions, and coordinate with project supervision
• • Willingness to travel frequently for projects; able to work outdoors in varied weather and on uneven terrain for 40–60 hours per week
• • Capable of performing preventive maintenance inspections and basic equipment maintenance; manual dexterity and mechanical reasoning

Qualifications

• • OSHA 10 (training provided if needed)
• • Valid driver’s license preferred
• • First Aid/CPR — desirable
• • Aerial lift, trenching/excavation, or all-terrain material handler certifications — desirable
• • Ability to pass the operator skills test for motorgrader and other assigned equipment
• • English proficiency for reading plans, basic reporting, and crew communication
