Excavator Operator — Mainline Pipe & Mass Excavation

About this role

Join a heavy civil crew in the Baltimore area operating hydraulic excavators on utility installation and large-scale earthmoving projects. This role focuses on safe, precise operation of excavators (Cat 330/336/349 or similar) for trenching, grading, slope work and mass excavation. This is a full-time, hands-on position working closely with crew members and supervisors. You’ll read plans and grade stakes, perform daily equipment checks and basic maintenance, and follow site safety rules to keep work moving and crews protected.

What you'll do

  • Operate hydraulic excavators (Cat 330/336/349 or similar) for digging, trenching, grading and bulk earthmoving
  • Excavate for water, sewer and storm drainage utilities and perform slope work and large-scale grading
  • Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes and laser levels to hit line and grade
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance and report mechanical issues
  • Follow OSHA and site safety standards; work with crew and supervisors to sequence tasks and maintain productivity

What we're looking for

  • Minimum 2 years operating excavators on site development, utility installation or mass excavation (3+ years preferred)
  • Proven experience with Cat 330/336/349-class machines or similar hydraulic excavators
  • Ability to read construction plans, grade stakes and operate a laser level
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to Baltimore-area job sites
  • Physically able to perform heavy work, work outdoors in all weather and lift as required
  • Strong teamwork skills and clear on-site communication

Qualifications

  • 2+ years operating excavators on utility or mass excavation projects
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid driver's license
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety standards; site safety training as required
  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings and grade stakes
  • Willingness to complete company pre-employment checks and site-specific training
