Heavy Equipment Operator — Roller

About This Role

Seeking an experienced roller operator for paving and asphalt work in the Richmond, VA area. You’ll run asphalt rollers on road and paving projects, work with a small crew, and follow directions from the foreman to get projects done safely and on time. Ideal candidates have hands-on roller experience on paving jobs, know basic heavy-equipment maintenance, and show up ready to work. This is local field work with steady shifts and opportunities to pick up extra hours on high-production projects.

What You'll Do

  • Operate asphalt/paving roller safely and efficiently on roads, driveways, parking lots and other paving surfaces
  • Set up, adjust, and control roller speed, vibration and water systems to achieve proper compaction
  • Perform pre- and post-shift equipment checks; report defects and perform basic maintenance (fluid checks, greasing, etc.)
  • Work on paving/asphalt crews with foreman: follow instructions, coordinate with screed operators, truck drivers and flaggers
  • Follow site safety procedures, maintain clean work area, assist with traffic control as needed and support general paving tasks (raking, handwork)

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 2+ years operating asphalt rollers on paving projects or road construction
  • Knowledge of asphalt compaction principles, roller controls, and common paving practices
  • Hands-on heavy equipment maintenance skills: basic troubleshooting, greasing, and pre-start inspections
  • Able to follow directions from foreman, read simple plans/grade stakes, and work in crew-based field environment
  • Ability to lift/handle materials, stand for long shifts, and work in varied weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation to Richmond-area job sites; willingness to pass drug screen

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • OSHA 10-hour or equivalent safety training preferred
  • Flagger certification or ability to obtain on hire
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
  • English required; Spanish or other language skills a plus
