Heavy Equipment Operator
About This Role
Heavy equipment operators needed in Roanoke, VA for construction and earthmoving work. You’ll run excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers and other site machines on residential and commercial projects. Work is steady, hands-on, and focused on safe, accurate sitework. Ideal candidates have experience with excavation, grading, paving prep, and routine equipment maintenance. You’ll follow site plans, take direction from foremen, and keep machines inspected and ready to go — real work for people who know equipment and take pride in getting the job done right.
What You'll Do
- • Operate excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, and other heavy equipment for excavation, grading, and material moving
- • Perform site preparation tasks: digging, trenching, backfilling, grading to line and grade, and final finish work
- • Load, unload, and secure materials; spot trucks and assist with material placement
- • Inspect equipment daily, perform basic maintenance and report defects; keep machines fueled and clean
- • Follow site plans, grade stakes, and supervisor directions to meet project specifications
- • Follow all safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and assist with demolition and site cleanup as needed
What We're Looking For
- • 2+ years operating heavy equipment (excavator, dozer, loader, skid steer) on construction or earthmoving sites
- • Hands-on experience with routine heavy-equipment maintenance and troubleshooting (diesel/gas engines, transmissions, powertrain)
- • Experience in civil/industrial construction tasks: grading, paving prep, demolition, and site cleanup
- • Ability to operate related equipment as needed: dump trucks, forklifts, motor graders, scrapers
- • Able to read basic site plans and grade stakes, follow instructions, and work with a crew
- • Physically fit, reliable, able to work outdoors in all weather, and hold a valid driver’s license
Qualifications
- • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- • DOT medical card or ability to obtain one if required for hauling
- • OSHA 10 (preferred) or willingness to obtain OSHA 10/30
- • NCCER or equipment-operator certification preferred
- • Forklift certification preferred
- • High school diploma or GED; basic English proficiency for safety and instructions
