Layout Technician (Surveyor)

About this role

Join a construction layout crew in Austin, TX as a Layout Technician and help keep projects accurate, safe, and on schedule. You’ll set and verify control, operate Trimble/Leica instruments, collect and document field data, and translate plans into precise field layout. This role is hands-on and outdoors: expect travel between sites, physical work in varied weather, close coordination with field crews and project teams, and ongoing technical growth using AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Safety and attention to detail are essential.

What you'll do

• • Perform layout tasks on civil construction sites: stakes, offsets, control checks, and point establishment.
• • Operate and maintain survey instruments and data collectors (Trimble/Leica); troubleshoot field equipment and data downloads.
• • Collect, verify and document field measurements; interpret construction drawings, plans and specifications for layout.
• • Set up and verify control networks; transfer design coordinates to the field and perform QA checks on layout work.
• • Produce and update as-built notes and layout deliverables using AutoCAD/Civil 3D and survey software.
• • Work directly with foremen, equipment operators and project teams to sequence layout activities and maintain site safety.

What we're looking for

• • Previous layout/survey experience on civil construction projects.
• • Proven use of Trimble or Leica instruments and common data collectors in the field.
• • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D for layout, as-built documentation and point export/import.
• • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans and specifications.
• • Physically able to work outdoors in varied conditions and perform lifting up to 50 lbs; comfortable climbing and working at heights.
• • Strong communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills; dependable travel to job sites in the Austin area.

Qualifications

• • High school diploma or GED preferred; surveying technical coursework or certificate a plus.
• • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites.
• • Proficient in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
• • Experience operating Trimble or Leica survey instruments and common data collectors.
• • Ability to communicate in English (verbal and written) for clear jobsite coordination.
