About this role
Work on commercial and civil construction sites in and around Austin as a Layout Technician. You’ll set control, run layout from plans, operate Trimble/Leica instruments, collect field data, and document as-built conditions to keep projects accurate and on schedule. This role is hands-on and outdoors. You’ll collaborate with foremen, labor crews, and project teams, follow site safety rules, and use AutoCAD/Civil 3D and data collectors for daily layout and reporting. The right candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable with physical work, and committed to learning surveying technology and best practices.
What you'll do
- Set up and operate total stations, GNSS/GPS rovers, and data collectors (Trimble/Leica) for layout and control work
- Perform stakeout, grade checks, and verify elevations, lines, and points per construction drawings
- Collect, QA/QC, and document field data; produce as-built notes and digital records
- Interpret construction plans, civil drawings, and specifications to execute layout tasks
- Use AutoCAD and Civil 3D (and related software) to transfer field data, prepare layout files, and update drawings
- Communicate with foremen and crews to coordinate layout sequences and maintain site safety
What we're looking for
- Previous experience on civil or commercial construction layout or land surveying projects
- Proficiency with Trimble or Leica total stations, GNSS rovers, and data collectors
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D; ability to prepare and modify basic layout files
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications
- Physically able to work outdoors: lift up to 50 lbs., climb, bend, and stand for long periods
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; surveying technician certificate or related coursework preferred
- Proven use of Trimble or Leica systems and data collection software
- Proficient with AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- OSHA 10 preferred or willingness to obtain site safety certifications
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
- English — required
