Surveyor Instrument Man (Journeyman)
About This Role
Join a long-term industrial/data center project in Abilene, TX as a Journeyman Surveyor Instrument Man. This 24-month role offers steady hours, heavy overtime potential, and competitive pay ($36–$40/hr) plus a $130/day per diem for candidates commuting 50+ miles. You will support the Party Chief with layout, measurements, and operation of survey instruments. Expect hands-on field work — setting up total stations and GPS, marking elevations/grades, brush cutting, staking, and checking work to meet project standards. Reliable, safety-first candidates with strong instrument experience are encouraged to apply.
What You'll Do
- • Set up, operate, and maintain total stations, GPS rovers, and other electronic survey equipment
- • Assist the Party Chief with layout, planning, diagramming, and establishing control points
- • Perform manual survey labor: brush cutting, carrying stakes/pins, marking right-of-way, and site cleanup
- • Measure distances and elevations, install/mark grades, and estimate quantities and materials
- • Inspect work for accuracy and compliance; report deficiencies and support correction efforts
- • Maintain tools and field records, and communicate measurements and findings clearly to the crew
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 5 years surveying experience preferred; industrial/construction surveying required
- • Proven experience operating total stations and GPS/RTK rovers
- • Able to perform physical field work: lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, hike brush, work outdoors in all weather
- • Ability to read civil drawings and follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as project demands (50–60 hrs/week common)
- • Must pass drug/alcohol testing and fit-for-duty screening
Qualifications
- • Total Station and GPS Rover experience (required)
- • 5+ years land/industrial surveying experience (preferred)
- • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- • OSHA 10 (preferred) or equivalent safety training
- • Able to pass background, drug test, and fit-for-duty screening
- • Familiarity with AutoCAD/civil drawing interpretation and field notes
