Heavy Equipment Operator — Excavator/Dozer
About This Role
Join a crew in Culpeper, VA as a Heavy Equipment Operator working on concrete construction projects. You’ll run excavators, dozers, skid steers, loaders and related machines to handle layout, fine grading, trenching, pit excavations, backfill and hoisting under a foreman’s direction. This is hands-on, steady work for operators who know how to read grades, use rotating and slope lasers, plan spoil and truck flow, and keep equipment maintained and running safely. What You'll Do
- • Operate excavators, dozers, skid steers, loaders and other heavy equipment for earthmoving and finishing on concrete sites
- • Set up and use rotating and slope lasers (and GPS/rover systems) to achieve required grades and maintain layout lines
- • Perform trenching and pit excavations to OSHA benching and slope standards; control lay-out lines and manage safe lay-back/benching
- • Plan spoil placement, determine truck needs, and sequence equipment to keep continuous production without idle time
- • Execute backfilling and compaction in lifts, ensure proper compaction methods, and assist with routine equipment maintenance
- • Assist with hoisting and finishing applications as directed by foreman to meet project specs
What We're Looking For
- • Minimum 3 years operating excavators/dozers/loaders on commercial construction sites (concrete experience preferred)
- • Ability to read civil drawings, perform site layout, and work with lasers/GPS to achieve precise grades
- • Knowledge of OSHA trenching/benching standards and safe excavation practices
- • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, balance, kneel and work at heights when required
- • Dependable attendance, ability to work local job sites in Culpeper area, and follow foreman direction
Qualifications
- • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- • OSHA 10 (preferred) — OSHA 30 or excavation safety training a plus
- • Equipment operator certification (NCCER or equivalent) or documented work history
- • Forklift certification and/or CDL Class B preferred
- • Ability to pass drug/alcohol screen and background check; basic English for safety communication
