Welding Engineer

Walker, LA $29-$38/hr

About this role

Join a busy fabrication shop in Walker, LA as the on-site Welding Engineer. You’ll provide hands-on technical support, ensure welding work meets ASME and customer specs, and work directly with production and quality teams to keep projects moving and compliant. This is a full-time, on-site role in a manufacturing/fabrication environment. You’ll develop and maintain welding procedures, monitor welder performance, troubleshoot welding and fit-up issues, and drive practical improvements to welding processes and documentation.

What you'll do

  • Interpret and apply ASME Section IX and B31.3 requirements for welding procedure and welder qualifications on the shop floor.
  • Develop, review, implement, and maintain welding procedures (PQR/WPS) and documentation to meet code and customer specs.
  • Observe and audit welding activity for compliance and quality; perform weld evaluations and recommend corrective actions with Quality and Operations.
  • Troubleshoot welding and fabrication problems (distortion, porosity, incomplete fusion, procedure issues) and provide hands-on guidance to welders and supervisors.
  • Provide clear technical direction to production crews, inspectors, and engineers; support welder qualifications and maintain records.
  • Identify and lead process improvement opportunities to increase welding quality, consistency, and productivity.

What we're looking for

  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in welding engineering, welding quality, or heavy fabrication (or equivalent technical experience).
  • Solid working knowledge of ASME Section IX and B31.3 and how they apply to procedure and welder qualifications.
  • Hands-on familiarity with GTAW, GMAW, FCAW and SAW processes and ability to evaluate weld quality on the shop floor.
  • Ability to read and interpret welding symbols, fabrication drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and team skills; able to work directly with welders, quality, and production staff to implement fixes and improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Materials, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical experience preferred (relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of degree).
  • Familiarity with welding procedure qualification (PQR/WPS) and welder performance qualification requirements per ASME IX.
  • AWS certification or Welding Engineer certification preferred (AWS CWEng, Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) a plus).
  • Proven experience with GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW processes in a fabrication or piping environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and capable of maintaining accurate welding records and documentation.
