Welder — TIG Pipe Tacker (Shop)
About this role
Experienced shop tacker needed for hands-on TIG pipe tacking in Walker, LA. This shop-based role is not entry-level — you'll be fitting, aligning, and tack welding carbon steel pipe to code-quality standards for production welders to complete. Candidates must be proficient with GTAW on carbon steel pipe and able to produce clean, sound tacks in multiple positions. All applicants must pass an on-site tacker test: TIG on 2-inch Schedule 80 pipe in the 5G position, with tacks that pass visual inspection and X-ray.
What you'll do
- • Fit, position, and align carbon steel pipe for tack welding to meet code-quality fit-up
- • Perform TIG (GTAW) tacks on pipe in multiple positions, including 5G
- • Place consistent, clean tacks with correct root opening and tack placement for production welders
- • Prepare joints: clean, bevel, measure root gaps, and verify alignment before tacking
- • Maintain basic documentation of work and report fit-up or material issues to lead
What we're looking for
- • Previous professional TIG (GTAW) pipe tacking experience required
- • Proven ability to fit-up and tack carbon steel pipe to code-quality standards
- • Solid understanding of alignment, root opening, tack size/placement, and joint prep
- • Comfortable tacking pipe in multiple positions, including 5G
- • Able to read basic drawings, use tape measures, calipers, and common pipefitting tools
- • Must pass on-site tacker test: TIG on 2-inch Schedule 80 pipe in 5G; tacks must pass visual and X-ray
Qualifications
- • Proficiency with GTAW (TIG) on carbon steel pipe
- • Experience producing tacks acceptable for visual inspection and radiographic (X-ray) testing
- • Blueprint/print reading and basic measurement skills
- • Familiarity with code welding practices and acceptance criteria
- • AWS/ASME welding certifications preferred
- • Ability to pass the required on-site 5G TIG tacker test (2-inch Schedule 80)
