Our Story

Skillit was founded in 2021 to solve a problem our founder and CEO Fraser Patterson was experiencing - he wanted to hire insanely talented finish carpenters for his construction company in New York but was struggling to find them. Unlike others, he felt the problem wasn’t simply that the pool of skilled labor was shrinking, but that the skilled trades gap had given workers all the power.

They weren’t actively searching for jobs, answering cold calls, or jumping through hoops anymore. The old recruiting methods were dead. To succeed, employers needed to be proactive, act like headhunters, and adopt a “worker-first” playbook.

Skillit quickly evolved into a fast-growing database of vetted craft professionals, helping employers connect with workers while delivering a worker-first experience at every step for everyone involved.

Today, Fraser is joined by a talented team of builders on a mission to use data to fix the skilled trades gap. Together they see a future where every job site has the perfect allocation of skills.

Our culture — the important stuff

Every day we strive to exhibit these behaviors to support us in achieving our mission.

✊ Respect

The way we treat ourselves and each other.

  • We bring our best selves to work and treat people with respect, regardless of their position.

    We empower others.

    We keep an open mind.

We excel at listening and giving and getting feedback.

We assume the best of each other and expect the best from each other.

🚀 Ambition

The energy that propels us forward.

  • We see ambition as a positive trait and believe winners are ethical.

Being an excellent team player is how we win together.

    We’re confident but not arrogant.

    Instead of managing, we lead.

We uphold high standards and strive for seemingly impossible victories.

🎁 Delight

The user experience we strive to deliver with our product.

  • We get to understand our users, human to human.

Everyone is "tech-savvy" if you build them a well-designed product.

    Craftsmanship eats ideas.

We obsess over finding details that spark joy and surprise.

Why we’re called Skillit.

In the summer of 2020, our founder and CEO, Fraser began dreaming of building a database of vetted craft professionals. He came across an ad for Designit, which sparked the realization that as degrees continue to lose value in a changing job market, future workers won’t “degree-it” or “diploma-it” — they’ll “Skill-it!” That’s how the name was born, along with our boot tread icon, symbolizing walking in a craft professional’s shoes, respecting the craft, and supporting the inclusive American Dream.
