Hey! We’re Skillit 👋

We’re a passionate and opinionated team of builders on a mission to fix the construction industry’s skilled labor crisis.

We have a hunch that building the world’s largest database of vetted craft professionals will do the trick while empowering humanity to build a better, healthier and more sustainable world.

Read on to learn about our story, team, values and open roles.

Our Story

Skillit was founded in 2021 to solve a problem our founder and CEO Fraser Patterson was experiencing - he wanted to hire insanely talented finish carpenters for his construction company in New York but was struggling to find them. Unlike others, he felt the problem wasn’t so much that the pool of skilled labor was shrinking, but that their information hadn’t been captured and structured in a way employers could discover them.

Turns out he wasn’t alone and the idea of a fast-growing database of vetted craft professionals gained traction with dozens of the nation’s biggest builders. As more craft professionals shared their skills, experience, pay and communication preferences the idea quickly grew to include powerful filtering, messaging and market intelligence tools designed to make the hiring experience radically faster and smarter for skilled trade pros and contractors.

Today, Fraser is joined by a talented team of builders committed to helping fix the world’s skilled labor crisis so humanity stands a shot at hitting its biggest goals.

Our culture — the important stuff

Every day we strive to exhibit these behaviors to support us in achieving our mission.

✊ Respect

The way we treat ourselves and each other.

  • We bring our best selves to work and treat people with respect, regardless of their position.

    We empower others.

    We keep an open mind.

We excel at listening and giving and getting feedback.

We assume the best of each other and expect the best from each other.

🚀 Ambition

The energy that propels us forward.

  • We see ambition as a positive trait and believe winners are ethical.

Being an excellent team player is how we win together.

    We’re confident but not arrogant.

    Instead of managing, we lead.

We uphold high standards and strive for seemingly impossible victories.

🎁 Delight

The user experience we strive to deliver with our product.

  • We get to understand our users, human to human.

Everyone is "tech-savvy" if you build them a well-designed product.

    Craftsmanship eats ideas.

We obsess over finding details that spark joy and surprise.

Why we’re called Skillit.

In the summer of 2020, our founder and CEO, Fraser began dreaming of building a database of vetted craft professionals. He came across an ad for Designit, which sparked the realization that as degrees continue to lose value in a changing job market, future workers won’t “degree-it” or “diploma-it” — they’ll “Skill-it!” That’s how the name was born, along with our boot tread icon, symbolizing walking in a craft professional’s shoes, respecting the craft, and supporting the inclusive American Dream.
