Our Story
Skillit was founded in 2021 to solve a problem our founder and CEO Fraser Patterson was experiencing - he wanted to hire carpenters for his construction company in New York but was struggling to find them.
Unlike others, he felt the problem wasn’t simply that the pool of skilled labor was shrinking, but that traditional hiring tools like Indeed lack the critical skills, experience and preference data needed to find, screen, and engage craft workers. As more workers retire and demand soars, he figured this data gap was the biggest obstacle to progress in the construction industry.
And that’s why he founded Skillit, the first data-driven platform for sourcing craft workers. Skillit gives leading commercial, civil and industrial contractors efficient access to a fast-growing network of vetted talent and the tools to scale their craft workforces, enabling them to deliver the world’s most ambitious construction projects and shape the future of our nation, planet, and human experience.
Today, Fraser is joined by a talented team of builders on a mission to use data to fix the skilled trades gap. Together they see a future where every job site has the perfect allocation of skills.

Why we’re called Skillit.
In the summer of 2020, our founder and CEO, Fraser began dreaming of building a database of vetted craft professionals. He came across an ad for Designit, which sparked the realization that as degrees continue to lose value in a changing job market, future workers won’t “degree-it” or “diploma-it” — they’ll “Skill-it!” That’s how the name was born, along with our boot tread icon, symbolizing walking in a craft professional’s shoes, respecting the craft, and supporting the inclusive American Dream.
